There aren’t a lot of reasons to clean your air ducts, because even if they have dust clinging to the inside, most often none of that dust will be blown back into your house. If the dust has already stuck to the walls of your duct system, then it probably won’t detach and blow back into your house. There are a few reasons to have your air ducts cleaned, and when they need to be cleaned, they need it badly. Here are a few reasons to have your air ducts cleaned:
Mold can create significant health problems if not treated. If your air ducts have been exposed to moisture then they are susceptible to mold growth. There are a few things you should consider about mold growing in your HVAC system. First, you may not be able to see the mold growth, but if you are suspicious that there may be moisture, it would be a good idea to have someone inspect your system. The second thing to consider is where water might be coming from because unless you fix the core issue, mold will start growing again as soon as the ducts are cleaned. By fixing the source of the water, you prevent more moisture from invading your system. The last thing to consider is that not all black substances on the walls of the ducts are mold, and it would be smart to have the substance tested before paying to have your ducts cleaned for no reason.
This is probably the reason that most people dread. Rats and mice can live inside the duct system undetected for a little while until the smell or sound give them away. Insects also enjoy the dark, dryness of air ducts, and insects like roaches and spiders are some of the most common creatures to reside in your duct system. The first step to take in this situation would be to get rid of whatever creature invaded your house. Depending on how bad the invasion is, and which creature has set up shop, you probably want a professional exterminator to take care of the situation. After you are pests-free that is the time to clean the air ducts. This will get rid of any waste left behind by the unwanted guests, and keep them from returning.
Excessive Dirt and Dust
If there is an excessive amount of dust and dirt on the inside walls of your air ducts, then it would be a good idea to clean them. At that point, the dust starts being blown back into the house and can cause your HVAC system to work harder.
By cleaning your air ducts, you decrease the amount of dust being blown back into your house, prevent the invasion of pests, and preserve the quality of your HVAC system. It feels good to have an A/C and Heater that works, and it feels good to take care of them.
